Health Article Diabetes Type Two
Complications of Type 2 Diabetes
Approximately 27 million Americans and 285 million people worldwide are known to have Diabetes. More than 90% of these cases, have Type 2 Diabetes, also known as Adult Onset Diabetes, because it usually starts later in life than Type 1 Diabetes.
I have listed below, some details of the common complications associated with Type 2 Diabetes, to remind those that have this disease, to take care of themselves and search out some method of slowing the progression and perhaps even reversing the condition. I am not saying the word "Cure", because that is not allowed, however, I can assure you that with the correct management of your condition, you can with consultation with your doctor, wean yourself off medication and prevent some, or all of the dreadful complications.
Heart and Blood Vessel Disease. People with Type 2 Diabetes are more than twice as likely to have a heart attack, coronary artery disease, angina, stroke, atherosclerosis and high blood pressure. Heart disease accounts for about 50% of all Diabetic deaths.
Eye Complications Diabetes can cause you to develop diabetic retinopathy, with damage to the blood vessels of the retina, potentially leading to blindness. Glaucoma and cataracts also are more prevalent in diabetics. As many as 45% of Americans with diabetes are diagnosed with some stage of diabetic retinopathy.
Skin and Mouth Complications Gum infections, bacterial and fungal, infections such as psoriasis, or diabetic blisters, these type of infections can affect up to 30% of people with diabetes.
Nerve Damage, or Diabetic Neuropathy. Type 2 diabetes can damage the blood vessels which feed the nerves leading to the extremities. This can be experienced as a tingling, or pain in the finger tips, the toes, arms and legs, It can also cause erectile problems for men. This if unchecked through poor blood glucose level control, can lead to amputation of toes, fingers, or limbs. The consequences are so serious. Up to 50% of diabetics develop some type of diabetic neuropathy.
Foot Damage Type 2 diabetes can cause nerve damage, or poor blood flow in your feet, which leads to serious foot problems, increasing the chance of infections, ulcers, cuts and blisters.
Kidney Complications (Nephropathy) Your kidneys are used for filtering waste from your bloodstream, the filters become inefficient in their performance when affected by a high blood glucose level. This can lead to very serious problems, kidney disease, or even kidney failure, which means Dialysis, or a kidney transplant, if a donor kidney is available. Approximately 10% to 20% of patients with diabetes will die of kidney failure.
Alzheimer's It has not yet been proven, but diabetes appears to increase the possibility of developing Alzheimer's.
At this stage, there is no actual CURE for Diabetes, that is Type 1 or Type 2, but you can manage Type 2, quite easily, with some sensible eating of the right kind of foods, perhaps losing a little weight. The answer is with you. You can take charge of your life and help the body to heal. This can be done in a very short period of time, there can be significant changes in about a month to six weeks. As I have said before, this will not cure you of Type 2 diabetes, but it will bring you blood glucose levels down to a normal level. If, of course you do not wish to change, or if you return to the way you have been eating for most of your life, then the diabetes will return, and some of the awful complications listed above will eventually catch up with you.
